I made this by reading the Bible in ESV and NIV and blending together other versions of Psalm 119 acrostics with my own thoughts, ideas, and preferences. They each used a different mapping of letters than me, so they’re still worth checking out if you enjoyed mine, or if you just really love acrostics:
https://kcd.org.uk/uncategorized/2021/02/psalm-119-as-an-english-acrostic/
This one followed the English letters up to Yodh and made the same decision I did – that even though Hebrew famously doesn’t have the letter J, in romantic languages the J and Y aren’t so different, and using J instead of Y is more beautiful. Then he decided to skip K, which causes his letters to fall off synchronization from the Hebrew alphabet for the remainder.
This one matches the two alphabets more closely with phonetics, but falls out of sync with mine earlier. For Hebrew He, this version uses the English H whereas I used E. This is because Hebrew doesn’t exactly have vowels, or at least doesn’t start words with vowel sounds. When I reach Heth I use H, but this version uses Ch, because we all know how Hebrew speakers pronounce words starting with English H.
Hebrew doesn’t have a W, so when reaching Waw I mapped it to F to keep my English letters in order. This version used words beginning with W. The next letter is Zayin which is just as rare in Hebrew as it is in English, so this version maps to F but I used the English G. This version had already used G for Gimel which looks an awful lot like a gamma so that makes sense. I had already used C which isn’t a Hebrew letter, but then I allowed Ch instead of making it a different letter so those balance each other out I guess. For Kaph I allowed the hard K or the silent K, whereas this version allows hard K or hard C opening.
The very next letter Teth I used I, which is a vowel so Hebrew has no letter for it. In this version for Teth all verses start with the Th- sound. For Yodh I used J and this version used Y, similar to the other version.
From here both of our version allow English letters to fall slightly out of order to keep the phonetic matching. When reaching Ayin which English doesn’t have, this version uses I where my version uses O and this version omits the occidental O.
This one I didn’t find very impressive, but it was instructive to have the 8 Hebrew words for the one thing we love – law, way, testimony, precept, statute, command, decree, word
This one I rather enjoyed because like me, the goal seems to have been as many alliterations as possible! How fun! You should try it. This one even has alliterated headings. However it combines JK into Just King and starting at verse 81 Loving LORD it no longer lines up with mine.
I’ll probably do other Psalms eventually, but then keep in mind what website we’re on.
